How did you choose your pen name (and/or what does your pen name mean)?
My pen name makes reference to the presence of African culture in Louisiana. Gumbo is a traditional African dish that is regularly eaten in Louisiana. It's got a little bit of everything all mixed up together and it's one of my favorite foods. I'm not quite sure what Yaya means, but I like to think of it as "all-good". When you put the two together you get something that's good for your soul.
Why (and how) did you begin writing erotic fiction?
Writing has always been a way for me to express my thoughts and ideas. Writing is therapy for me. I can share ideas and thoughts on paper that I sometime have a hard time saying in conversation. Erotica just happens to be what's on my mind most times.
How long have you been writing?
I've been writing ever since I can remember, but I've only been keeping a journal of my ideas for about 12 years now. It's only been since my "coming out" two years ago that my writings have taken a more erotic nature. Finally, I have someone that stimulates those emotions.
How do you get ideas for your work?
My wife is my inspiration. She stimulates such deep thoughts and erotic feelings in me, that I have to write about them. Every intimate experience with her is a story or a poem that I can't wait to write about.
How long does it typically take to write a piece?
Not long. Usually, my head is overflowing with ideas by the time I sit down to write. I write from experiences and emotions that I feel deep inside, so getting them down on paper doesn't take much time. Most times I have so much going on in my head, I have to stop myself from writing.
How does your work reflect (or compare to) your real life experiences?
My stories and poems are my real life experiences. I'm not a very imaginative person. I don't know how to make up stuff. I would be a terrible writer, if I had to write fiction.
What creative projects are you working on right now?
Unfortunately, most of my creativity has been directed to work and school lately. Hopefully, I can get back to my stories and poetry real soon.
Has your work been published anywhere else? If yes, where?
No, but I look forward to doing so.
When can we look forward to reading something else by you on Kuma?
Driving Ms. Freaky will be out this August.
If you had to choose, which one of your own stories or poems published with Kuma would you say is your favorite?
I would have to say Orgasm, because it was my first. Not my first orgasm, my first poem that was published.
Which stories and/or poetry on Kuma do you like that were NOT written by you?
I like Conchita Alvarez, by Lisa Mamou and Birthday wish by Glitter. I like the first story because Ms. Alvarez reminds me of someone I worked with in college. I like the second story because it's about love that develops out of friendship.
Please tell us one thing you do for fun.
I enjoy going to festivals and concerts.
