Kimberly Stratton stared at the skyline through the 12th floor window of her office. The view was always beautiful at night, but it was spectacular in December with the addition of the colorful holiday lighting. All of the creative decorating and the twinkling of the lights helped to bring about the joy and good will that is intended this time of year. As mesmerizing as the skyline could be, Kim was more mesmerized with thoughts of Andrea Kendall, a woman she’d met only two weeks ago. She kept telling herself that she’s not ready to date anyone after the bitter breakup she’d had with her ex-girlfriend only seven months ago. Though there are several women she knows who’d love to date her, Kim has shown no interest in them.
But no matter how hard she tries to keep her mind on her work and the rest of her daily routine, Kim’s thoughts keep drifting back to the restaurant downtown and the moment she met Andrea, and how the attraction was immediate and strong. Andrea was friendly, warm, and her big, brown eyes seemed to look deep inside of Kim as though she needed to know more about her. Although they were having dinner with four other women the night they met, they may as well have been sitting at a table for two.
Kim is a successful and attractive 49-year-old co-owner and Director of Public Relations of a consulting firm that she and her business partner started twenty-one years ago. She has a beautiful mocha complexion, long, straight hair, a 5’9” 150 lb. athletic frame, and a way with people, which serves her well in her business and personal life. She is feminine, yet assertive, and usually has the upper hand in her relationships with others. With Andrea, however, her vulnerability was beginning to show through.
Andrea is a 46-year-old psychologist with her own practice. She’s 5’10” tall, has smooth, dark chocolate skin, locs that flow down her back, lots of curves, and a sensual seductive smile. She is just as attracted to Kim as Kim is to her. The difference is that she is open with her feelings. She has made it clear to Kim that she wants to date her and is willing to move as slowly as she needs to reach Kim’s comfort zone. And Andrea has been true to her word.
Kim finally managed to tear herself away from the view and looked at her watch. She couldn’t believe it was already 7:00. Then she realized that she was supposed to meet her best friend, Stephanie for dinner at 7:30. ‘Oh, well, no time to go home to change clothes’, Kim thought. She headed to the restaurant.
Stephanie was already seated when Kim arrived. “Hey, girl!”
“Hi , Steph!”
“You must have come straight here from work.”
“Yes, girl, I lost all track of time. I look okay, don’t I?”
“You’re fine. I just know how you like to change clothes after work. So, why did you have to stay so late today?”
“Stephanie, I didn’t have to work late. As a matter of fact, I didn’t have much work to do at all. My mind was somewhere else most of the day.”
“What do you mean?”
“Girl, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Andrea.”
“Whaat? You’re kidding! I noticed that the two of you were deep in conversation during dinner on Saturday, but I had no idea she was doing all that to you.”
“I don’t know what’s happening. No woman has ever made me feel this way. We’ve talked on the phone several times, and she sends me these sweet little emails and text messages, but we haven’t even been on a date yet. When we shook hands after you introduced us, a feeling went through me that I’ve never felt. Even her smile made my knees weak, girl.”
“Wait a minute. Is this the same Kimberly Stratton, my best friend that I’ve known since third grade? The same Kimberly I know to always be in control? If someone else had told me this story, I wouldn’t believe it. Someone has actually turned your head. Ha! Ha!”
“She’s done more than turn my head; she’s touched my heart.”
“Wow. Okay, Kim, all teasing aside. This is wonderful. I haven’t seen you this excited about anybody since high school. Hey, I’m excited for you.”
“I do feel like a school girl again. Steph, am I being silly? I mean at my age acting this way?”
“Kim, of course not. You don’t have to be any particular age. You should just enjoy how you feel and go for it. I’m happy you’ve met someone you really like. And to think that I’m the one who introduced you. I wish I could’ve done it sooner.”
“Why have you been keeping her a secret, anyway? How long have you known her?”
“Honestly, I met Andrea three years ago. About six months later, she left town to go on a sabbatical, and we lost touch. Besides, you were still with what’s-her-name back then.”
“Yeah, I know. So how did you meet again? I mean, how were you able to invite her to the dinner?”
“Oh, I ran into her at the mall a couple of days before the dinner. She told me that she had been living in Chicago for the past two years, and she had just moved back to L.A. and was trying to get in touch with old friends. So I invited her to go out with us. She said she’d try to make it, and the rest you know.”
“Stephanie, I am so glad you did.”
“So am I. Somebody needs to get you out of that office and socializing again. So, are we having dinner, or do you have that I’m-in-love-so-I’m-not-hungry-syndrome?”
“Very funny. Yes, we’re having dinner. But I want to be home by 10:30. Andrea said she’d call me tonight at eleven.”
“Did you give her your cell?”
“Yes, I did, but I asked her to call me at home first. I want to be comfortable and relaxed when she calls. Is that okay with you?”
“Hey, it’s fine with me. Well, let’s order then. We don’t want you to miss that phone call.”
“Okay, Steph, you’ve had enough fun with me. Let’s change the subject. How’s Sharon?”
“She’s fine. Still working late nights on that big project I told you about.”
“Oh, yeah, that client that keeps making all those changes.”
“Yeah, girl, I think Sharon has had to redo the blueprints four or five times so far. She gets home every night around 1:00 a.m. just exhausted. She’s really excited though because this is the biggest job her company has had. And she bills the client by the hour. So she should have a pretty good payday as well.”
“That’s great. I’m happy she’s fulfilling her dream of being an architect. How are you holding up not seeing her all day and night?”
“It’s not too bad. I just keep telling myself that the client will be satisfied with the plan eventually, and things will get back to normal. Besides, Sharon hasn’t forgotten about me. She leaves little notes for me on the refrigerator door telling me that she loves me and that she’ll make it up to me. I’ve even had a gift or two waiting for me when I’ve gotten home from work.”
“Oh, how sweet. How did you get so lucky?”
“I wish I knew, girl. But I do realize that I’ve been blessed, so I don’t complain. I’m just waiting patiently for my turn.”
“I’m sure it won’t be too much longer, Steph.”
“You’re probably right. Speaking of lucky, Ms. Andrea has a pretty good reputation. I’ve been told that she’s very attentive and monogamous. So, it sounds like you’re getting a good woman.”
“Oh, really? And did this information come from a reliable source?”
“Yes, it did. When I ran into her at the mall, her best friend was with her. She was telling me how Andrea is the perfect catch, but she’s just about given up on dating because she’s been meeting all these crazy women; you know, the ones just looking for somebody to take care of them.”
“Oh, yeah, I know that type. Well, I hope you’re right. And by the way, I don’t have her yet.”
“Kim, yes you do. I’ve seen the way you two look at each other. And I see the way your eyes light up as you’re talking about her. You like her; she likes you. This is a done deal.”
“Okay, Stephanie.” Kim looked at her watch. Girl, it’s almost 10:00. I’d better go. Dinner is on me.”
“Well, thank you very much. I’ll get it next time. Let me know how the conversation goes and when you two will have your first date.”
“Okay, I’ll call you tomorrow.”
Kim could feel her excitement building as she drove home. So far, her conversations with Andrea have been so short that they haven’t had much time to really talk. This will be the first time that they’ll have the chance to get to know each other a little bit.
She got home at 10:25. That was just enough time for her to take a hot bath, make a cup of tea and get into bed. She tried to read while she waited for Andrea’s phone call, but she couldn’t concentrate. So she turned on some soft music. At 10:58, the phone rang. “Hello?”
“Hi, Kim,” Andrea said with almost a whisper.
“Hi, Andrea.” Kim knew that Andrea’s sexy voice would make her melt.
“I didn’t wake you, did I?”
“Oh, no, I was waiting for your call.”
“Were you really?”
“Yes, I’ve been looking forward to it all day.”
“Is that right?”
“Yes, that’s right. As a matter of fact, I thought about you so much today that I got very little work done.”
“Wow, I feel honored. If it’s any consolation, I can guarantee that what I have planned for us will be worth the loss of every minute of production time.”
“Really?” Kim could barely contain her excitement.
Not wasting any time Andrea asked Kim to go out with her.
A big smile spread across Kim’s face. “I’d love to.”
“Okay, are you free on Saturday?”
“Yes.” Kim wanted to tell Andrea that she was free on any day for her.
“Do you like seafood?”
“I love seafood.”
“Good, we have at least one thing in common. Would you like to have dinner on the pier?”
“That sounds good.”
“Sounds good to me, too. I can’t remember the last time I took a Saturday off.”
“Do you usually have patients on Saturday?”
“Oh, no. I’ve just been a workaholic lately. I go into the office to review the files of the new patients I inherited from a colleague who’s retiring.”
“Oh, I see. So have you made it through all of them yet?”
“No, I haven’t. But I just met this beautiful and sexy woman who has agreed to go out with me, and she is much more appealing than some dusty old files.”
“Andrea, has anyone ever told you that you are very charming?”
“Well, maybe a time or two.”
“I’d bet it’s been more like a hundred times.”
Andrea sensed that Kim may have thought that she wasn’t being serious. “Kim, I want you to know that I’m sincere. I wouldn’t try to BS you. I haven’t been in a relationship in three years. And I haven’t been on a date in over a year.”
“Why not?” Kim couldn’t believe someone as attractive as Andrea is not, at least, dating.
“I don’t know. I guess it just hasn’t been the right time or the right person; until now, of course. I’m excited about the possibility that we could be a couple. That hasn’t happened in a long time.”
“Andrea, I’m excited, too. And a little scared.”
“You know, Kim, we’re feeling the same things. But it’ll be okay. I know these are just words, but I still have to say them because they’re all I have right now. All I can do is tell you how I feel and what my intentions are. I believe what you tell me until you tell me or show me something different. I’m willing to take the risk…no, I have to take the risk because not doing so is a guarantee that I will be alone.”
“You are absolutely right. I couldn’t have said it better myself. But what scares me is that I’m ready to throw all caution to the wind, and I barely know you. Not only that, I’m actually sharing this information with you. I would never have done that before.”
“That’s okay; I wouldn’t use it against you. Believe me, I really do appreciate and respect how you feel. Besides, your friend Stephanie is looking out for you. I had to take an oath that, should things work out with us, I would not do anything to hurt you.”
“She what? When did this happen?”
“She called tonight about a half hour before I called you. But don’t worry; she was very nice about it, and I totally respect her and your friendship with her. It’s good to have a friend who cares about you so much.”
“And you’re sure she didn’t say anything to offend you?”
“No, of course not.”
“Okay, I don’t want her to give you any second thoughts about seeing me.”
“The only person who can do that is you. It’s all good. So…why are you single? What crazy person let you go?”
“Well, I’ve been single for only seven months. We were together off and on for about four years, but we never were very compatible. Honestly, all we really had was the sex, and that’s never been enough for me. I wanted a committed relationship, but she couldn’t give that to me. So, I finally ended it for good.”
“Well, it sounds like that was the best thing to do. But I must say her loss is my gain. Tell me, there must be others who have tried to get your attention.”
“Yeah, there are others, but the feeling is not mutual.”
Okay, just what I wanted to hear. So, can I pick you up at six on Saturday?”
“Yeah, that’s perfect.”
“Okay…well, it’s getting late, or should I say later. We both should get some rest. I’m glad I finally got the chance to talk to you for longer than thirty seconds, and I can’t wait to see you again.”
“I’m looking forward to seeing you again, too, Andrea.”
“I’ll be finished with my last patient tomorrow at 4:00, so if you have a moment, I would love to hear from you. I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until Saturday to talk to you again.”
“You’ll definitely hear from me.”
“Okay, well I hope you sleep well, Kim, and I’ll talk to you soon.”
“You do the same.”
“Good night.”
“Good night.”
Kim and Andrea both slept very well that night. The next day, which was Friday, went by quickly. All of Andrea’s patients made it to their appointments on time, and Kim’s clients were happy with the work that her firm had done. At 4:10, Andrea put on a Will Downing CD, fixed a cup of coffee, and put her feet up on her desk. Kim called her at 4:20, and they talked a little bit about how their day was going and their upcoming date. Later that evening, Kim called Stephanie.
“Hey, Steph!”
“Hi, Kim! You’re excited. You must’ve had a nice talk with Andrea last night.”
“I did. I like her so much. I’m trying hard to keep a good perspective. But my heart keeps overpowering my better sense. I’m hoping that you can help keep me grounded.”
“Kim, you do what you have to do, but like I said, this is a done deal. I have no doubt about it. And as far as you staying grounded, the fact that you realize the conflict between your heart and your head means that you are grounded. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“It’s just a feeling I have, and I trust my feelings. Just like when I felt that what’s-her-name wasn’t good for you; and I was right.”
“Alright, let’s not get into that. Could your optimism have something to do with the little talk you had with Andrea last night after I left the restaurant?”
“She told you about that, huh?”
“Yes, she did. And she really took up for you, too. She said she appreciates a friend like you.”
“Well, I was nice. When you and I talked last night, I could tell that you like her a lot, and I went into protection mode. I just wanted her to know that you mean the world to me and I don’t want to see you hurt.”
“It’s okay, Steph. I appreciate you looking out for me.”
“You’re welcome. Oh, and Kim, just for the record, I felt you two are destined to be together before I talked with Andrea.”
“Okay, my little psychic. Oh, I didn’t tell you the most exciting part; we have a date tomorrow night!”
“Kim, I am so happy for you. Where are you going?”
“We’re going to the pier for dinner.”
“That’ll be nice. I know you’ll have a great time. Do you know what you’re wearing yet?”
“No, not yet, but I’d better start looking tonight when I get home because you know I’ll change outfits twenty or thirty times before I make a decision.”
“Yeah, I know you, but the payoff is that you’ll look beautiful.”
“Thank you, my friend.”
“Sure! Hey, I’ve got some good news, too. Sharon is getting a break. Her client is leaving town for two weeks and won’t be able to see the new plans until she gets back. So, for the next two weeks, we’ll be making up for lost time.”
“Steph, that’s wonderful! It’s long overdue.”
“You’re telling me! Girl, I better head home. Sharon asked if I could cook tonight. It’s been a long time since she’s eaten at home, and as you know, she loves my cooking. So, we’ll have a nice quiet evening at home.”
“Have fun.”
“We will, and you have a great time on your first date, and call me Sunday and fill me in on the details.”
“I will; talk to you later.”
“Bye.”
When the doorbell rang, Kim took a quick look in the mirror to make sure that everything was in place. She wore a light brown linen sleeveless dress and dark brown pumps and her hair straight back in a pony tail. When she opened the door, Andrea greeted her with a single red rose. Kim took the rose, but it took her a moment to respond. She was taken aback by Andrea’s beauty. She wore gray slacks, a white, stretchy long-sleeved t-shirt and black high-heeled boots. What really got Kim’s attention was that Andrea’s locs were up and arranged in a bun. It really showed off her beautiful skin tone and those beautiful eyes. “Kim, are you okay?”
“Oh, yes, I’m sorry, come on in, Andrea. Thank you so much for the rose. It’s beautiful.”
“You’re welcome. You look great!”
“Do I? Thank you. So do you. I’ll get my coat then we can go.”
While Andrea waited she inhaled the fragrances in the room. She found them intoxicating. Kim, it smells so good; what is it?”
“Oh, I have strawberry and peach scented candles in my bedroom and bathroom. I’m sure that’s what you smell.”
“Mmm, I love it.”
“Really? Good, I like that combination, too.”
“Yeah, that’s nice. Well, shall we go?”
“I’m ready.”
The atmosphere at the restaurant was very romantic. The only lights in the dining area were the twinkling of the red, blue, green and white holiday lights and the single candle on each table. Kim and Andrea were sitting at a table with a view of the shoreline. The beach houses were all decorated beautifully with holiday lighting and ornaments. It was a clear night and the tide was still low, so they could see the decorations reflecting off the water as well.
“Kim, we’re finally here. I’ve been looking forward to this night.”
“So have I. This is a nice, romantic place. I’ve been to a couple of the other restaurants on the pier, but not here.”
“Really? I’ve been here twice; once with a couple of colleagues for a business dinner and once for a friend’s birthday party.”
“Well, it’s perfect for a date. Are you telling me I’m the first date you’ve taken here?”
Andrea thought about it for a moment. “I guess I am. And I agree; it is very romantic. You know, there’s a good reason that I’ve never been here on a date. I’ve had a tendency to date women who are more aggressive than I am. So, they have always made the decisions about where we would go and what we would do on dates. And they haven’t been the romantic types either. Obviously, none of those relationships have worked out. One day I realized that I had never asserted myself and approached a woman that I found attractive. All of my relationships happened because someone chose me. Over the past year, I decided that the next relationship I have would be with someone that I choose. Anyway, my point is that we’re here because this is my idea of a romantic date.”
“That’s fantastic! So, this evening is a kind of milestone for you, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, I guess you can say that.”
“Well, that calls for a toast; to happiness and choices. By the way, I’m very happy that you chose me.”
“I am, too.”
Kim and Andrea were having a wonderful evening. They talked about everything from movies to politics to relationships. They were having such a good time that they didn’t realize the restaurant was closing. It was the clanking of the dishes and the silverware in the kitchen that gave it away. So, as they were leaving, they thanked the servers and the manager for being so patient with them. When they got outside, the pier was almost deserted. The little gift shops were closed and the vendors had gone. All they could hear was the soothing sounds of the ocean.
On the way home, they listened to a collection of R&B love songs that Andrea had put together. Kim was hoping that she wasn’t dreaming. She was enjoying herself so much that she hated for their date to end. Andrea reached over and held Kim’s hand. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Thank you for a wonderful evening. I can’t remember when I’ve had a better time. Dinner was delicious; the restaurant was beautiful; and the company was…excuse me, is perfect.”
“I’m glad you enjoyed yourself, Kim. I had a wonderful time, too. Does that mean we can go out again?”
“Yes, of course, any time.”
“Okay, we’ll work it out.”
When they arrived at Kim’s house, they walked hand in hand to the door. Andrea put her arms around Kim’s waist, looked into her eyes, and softly kissed her on the lips. It took Kim’s breath away. She kissed her again; this time slowly sliding her tongue past Kim’s lips, their tongues barely touching. Kim drew in her breath then a soft moan escaped her lips. Andrea held her close and kissed her on the cheek. “Okay, I’d better go. I’ll call you.”
“Call me when you get home.”
“Okay, don’t go to sleep yet.”
“I won’t; I’ll be waiting for your call.”
As Andrea drove home, she couldn’t help thinking that Kim is the one. She’s intelligent, kind, considerate and beautiful. Although they had been on only one date, Andrea’s search was over. Kim is the woman she’s been waiting for all her life. As soon as she stepped in the house, she picked up the phone to make that call.
“Hi.”
“Hi, you made it okay?”
“I sure did. I didn’t wake you did I?”
“No, I was thinking about you.”
“Were you? I hope you were thinking something good.”
“Mmm hmm, among other things, you’re a great kisser I can still feel it.”
“Well, that makes two of us. Does that mean I can have another one?”
“Andrea, that means you can have as many as you want.”
“Okay, remember you said that because I’ll hold you to it.”
“Please hold me to it. So when can I see you again?”
“Tomorrow. I’m going to see my niece play basketball in Malibu.”
“Okay, that sounds like fun. Who does she play for?”
“The University in Santa Barbara. She’s a freshman. My brother and his wife live in Chicago and couldn’t make it here this time. I’m the only family she has in California, so I promised her that I’d go to as many of her games as I could. She’s really excited about this one because this is the final game in the tournament.”
“That is exciting; a freshman in a championship game. I’d love to go.”
“Alright, the game starts at two, so I’ll pick you up at 12:30.”
“Okay.”
The next morning, Kim gave Stephanie a call. “Steph, are you up yet?”
“Hey, Kim. Yeah, I’m up. Sharon and I are having breakfast; well, we’ve finished breakfast and just having coffee now.”
“Am I interrupting anything?”
“No, girl, she’s on her laptop. She says hello.”
“Tell her I said hi and ask her when I’ll see her again. I’m beginning to forget what she looks like.”
“Oh, you’ll see her soon, but I’ll save that update for later. Right now I want to know about your date. How was it?”
“It was wonderful! We went to that seafood restaurant; you know the one that sits on those pillars over the rocks. It has a beautiful view of the coastline.”
“Oh, yeah, I haven’t been there yet. Is the food good?”
“It is, but Stephanie, I had no appetite. I guess I have that syndrome you asked me about the other day. What was it; the I’m-in-love-so-I’m-not-hungry syndrome?”
“Yeah, that’s it. I knew it.”
“Then she held my hand on the way home, held my hand as she walked me to my front door, then she kissed me goodnight. Steph, I’ve never been kissed like that before. I could feel her passion just in that one kiss. Every moment of our date was wonderful.”
“Well, it sounds like Ms. Andrea knows just what to say and do to you.”
“She does, and I’m trying so hard to be cool and take it slow. But it’s not working. I know the next time she puts her arms around me, it’s all over. I’m just giving in to her.”
“Kim, it’s okay to do that. You two are supposed to be together. So, enjoy the ride.”
“You keep telling me that.”
“Yeah, because it’s true.”
“Okay, Steph, thanks for listening to me, and the reassurance. I have to go get dressed. Andrea is taking me to Malibu to her niece’s basketball game.”
“Another date; good! Okay, you know I’m always here for you. Just go out and have fun.”
“Thank you, Stephanie.”
“You’re welcome. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Bye.”
It was nice in Malibu. The sun was shining, but the air was cool and crisp. Jasmine, Andrea’s niece, played well (17 pts., 6 reb., 5 assts.), but she and her team lost by three points. Seeing Andrea made up for the loss. She was so happy that she made it to the game. They had been close since Jasmine was a baby. They spent a lot of time together, and Andrea was always supportive and available in times of elementary school teasing and typical teen crises situations. Jasmine was heartbroken when she and her family moved to Chicago a few years ago. She hated being so far away from Andrea, so she decided that she would go to college in California. Her first choice was Los Angeles, but Santa Barbara offered her a full scholarship. They were able to talk for a few minutes after the game then Jasmine had to get back to her hotel room so she could pack and head back to Santa Barbara. Andrea promised to make it to one or two of her home games.
Kim and Andrea decided to have dinner before heading home. They found a restaurant that offered a beautiful view of the sunset. Seeing Jasmine brought back a lot of memories for Andrea, and she talked about her own childhood and the rest of her family. Kim was so happy to be with her; to listen to all of her family stories and anything else she wanted to talk about. As they headed home, they talked about their likes, dislikes, things they planned to do and hoped to do in the future.
When they got back to L.A., Kim asked Andrea to come in for a cup of coffee. She just didn’t want their time together to end yet. “It’s decaffeinated, so you don’t have to worry about it keeping you awake. But it’s very good. It’s flavored with chocolate and cinnamon.”
“That does sound good.”
“Okay, I’ll be right back.” Kim turned on some music and showed Andrea her photography portfolio.
“These are really good, Kim. How long have you been taking pictures?’
“I started in high school. One of my teachers was a professional photographer, and when I showed an interest in it, he really encouraged me and taught me everything I know.”
“This coffee is really good.”
“I’m glad you like it.”
“It’s delicious. But back to your photographs. These are great. You can be a professional yourself.”
“Thank you. Stephanie has been telling me that for years. But I just do it because it’s fun. If I should be fortunate enough to make money, I’m afraid it won’t be fun any more because I would be obligated to do it. And I don’t want that.”
“I understand. You have to do what makes you happy.”
“Andrea… being with you makes me happy.”
“I like being with you, too.”
Kim moved closer to Andrea and kissed her deeply. They held each other tightly. Andrea’s hand moved from Kim’s waist to her breast, and they both moaned their pleasure. Then Andrea stopped. Kim wondered what was wrong.
“Kim, there’s nothing I’d rather do right now than make love to you. I’ve wanted you since the night we met. But I want our first time to be perfect. I don’t want to have to leave you early in the morning, and that’s what I’d have to do. That’s not very romantic, and the first time we make love has to be romantic. I want to wake up with you, make love to you again, have breakfast with you and do whatever we want to do together.”
”You’re right. Watching you leave in the morning would be much harder than waiting until the time is right. So…we have something special to look forward to.”
“We do. You’re not upset with me are you?’
“Not at all. In fact, it’s just the opposite. The more I’m with you, the more I want to be with you and the happier I am.”
Andrea stood up and reached for Kim’s hand. “Come on, Sweetheart. Walk me to the door. I’d better go home before…” She looked deeply into Kim’s eyes. “You are so beautiful. If I didn’t have patients depending on me tomorrow, there is no way that I’d be leaving you right now.”
“I wouldn’t let you go either. But you know what? I’m enjoying the anticipation. Every time I think about you, I get excited imagining how wonderful it’s going to be the first time our bodies touch and the first time we fall asleep in each other’s arms.”
“Kim, that sounds so good. Okay, I really have to go now; otherwise, I may not leave. I’m going to look over some patient files and I’ll call you later. What time do you go to bed?”
“About eleven.”
“I’ll call around 10:30.”
“Okay.” Kim pulled Andrea close and they just held each other for a moment. After a slow, soft kiss, Andrea headed home. She couldn’t believe that she was able to tear herself away from Kim without making love to her. But she liked the anticipation of it all, too. It felt good to be wanted again; to have passion again. After reviewing her patients’ files, she took a hot bath, got into bed and called Kim. They talked about how much they enjoyed their weekend together and how they looked forward to seeing each other again.
As soon as Kim said goodnight to Andrea, Stephanie called her. “Hey, Kim.”
“Steph, what’s up?”
“You should be telling me what’s up. Are you alone?”
“Yes, I’m alone.”
“Okay, I’m just checking, now that you have a girlfriend and all.”
“I don’t have a girlfriend, though I would love to call her my girlfriend.”
“You know it’s just a matter of time, and I like stating the inevitable.”
“That’s why I love you so much, Stephanie. You’re always so positive and optimistic.”
“Hey, my best friend deserves all that is positive. You’ve paid your dues enduring those dysfunctional relationships in the past. You’re entitled to some happiness, and I believe that it has arrived in the form of Andrea.”
“Thank you. You know, I think you’re right.”
“I know I’m right. So, how was your second date?”
“It was wonderful. Andrea’s niece is a nice girl. Her team didn’t win, but she played a good game. Andrea and I had dinner, and we talked a lot. She’s so romantic, Steph.” I’m falling in love with her already.”
“I can tell already. Since she isn’t there right now, can I assume you haven’t made love yet?”
“No, we haven’t yet. It almost happened tonight, but she wants our first time to be perfect.”
“Well…it sounds like she’s falling in love with you, too.”
“She tells me so in my dreams.”
“And dreams do come true. Listen, I wanted to tell you this yesterday when I talked to you, but I never got around to it. Anyway, Sharon and I want to invite you love birds to our house next Friday night. We’re having a dinner party.”
“Really, what’s the occasion?”
“Let’s call it a holiday party. I just want everyone to get together and have a good time; especially Sharon. You know her client will be back in town soon, and I thought it would be good for her to hang out with everyone before she had to get back to work on that project.”
“That’s a great idea. Andrea didn’t mention any plans she had that night, but I’ll ask her. As a matter of fact, let me call her now. Oh, should we bring anything?”
“Now, Kim, you know me. I take care of everything. All you need to bring is Andrea.”
“Yeah, I know. Okay.”
“Go ahead and make your call, and let me know tomorrow.”
“Alright, goodnight.”
“Later.”
Andrea was thrilled about going to the dinner party. She wanted to meet the rest of Kim’s friends, and she especially liked the idea of seeing Kim in a more intimate setting. And Kim couldn’t wait to show Andrea off.
The weather on Friday night was very cool. It actually felt like winter. All of the houses on Stephanie’s street were elaborately decorated and the smell of the burning fireplaces mixed with the fragrance of the pine trees. It was Sharon who greeted Kim and Andrea at the door. “Hey, Kim! I’m glad you could make it!”
“Sharon, it’s been a long time! How are you?” They gave each other a big hug.
“I’m doing great! And I think I know how you’re doing,” Sharon said as she looked at Andrea. “You must be Andrea.”
“Andrea, this is Sharon, Stephanie’s wife,” said Kim as she grinned from ear to ear.”
“It’s so nice to meet you Andrea. I’ve heard so much about you. Come on in. Let me have your coats.”
“Where’s Steph,” asked Kim.
“She’s in the kitchen getting her meal together. You’re the first to arrive.”
“Are we early?” asked Andrea.
“No,” said Sharon. Stephanie wanted you here at 7:00, and she told everyone else the party starts at 8:00. She wanted some time with just the four of us.”
“Oh, okay,” said Kim.
“Come on in the kitchen.”
“Hey, Steph! It sure smells good in here!”
“Kim, I’m glad you’re here! Andrea, it’s good to see you again! Come have a seat. You, too, Babe.” Stephanie went to the refrigerator to get a bottle of champagne and sat at down with everyone at the table.
“Steph, is everything okay?” asked Kim.
“Yeah, it’s fine. I just wanted to have a moment with my best friend and her new love. I know it’s only been a few weeks, but from the moment Kim met you, Andrea, she has become a different person. She had grown to hate relationships and decided to lose herself in her work. She had almost become a hermit…”
“Now wait a minute,” Kim objected.
“Just let me finish.” She smiled at Kim. “I don’t know what you did, but Kim is the happiest I’ve seen her in years. I don’t want to put any pressure on you, but I hope you keep doing what you’re doing because it has done wonders for my friend. I’d like to make a toast to friends, lovers and happiness.” Glasses clanked all around.
“Thank you, Stephanie,” said Andrea. Just for the record, I don’t feel any pressure at all. Kim is a wonderful woman, and I am fortunate that she wants to spend time with me. I’m looking forward to the happiness the future brings to our relationship.”
“Wow,” said Kim. This evening is off to a wonderful start. Stephanie, you have been there for me through everything, good and bad. Your optimism has always outshined my pessimism. And I love and appreciate you. Let me also say that I have every intention of keeping Andrea in my life.” She turned to face Andrea. “I know it’s early in our relationship, but being with you feels right and with you is where I want to be.” Then she gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“This is exactly what I wanted our little gathering to be,” said Stephanie. “To honor our friendships and our lovers. Thank you, ladies. One more toast to happy times, now and for the new year.”
“Cheers!” everyone said in unison.
The rest of the guests began to arrive at 8:15. Kim was glad to see her friends again. Since her relationship with Tina (a.k.a. what’s-her-name) ended, she’d made herself scarce, partly because she used her work to distract her from the pain and partly because her friends were also Tina’s friends. She tried to avoid all the restaurants, sports bars and other places that Tina liked to hang out. So, Kim was updated on all the gossip, good and bad, that was going around since she was out of circulation. A couple of people mentioned Tina, but it seems that most of them really tried to avoid talking about her. Everyone liked Andrea; they teasingly warned her to get out while she could because she had no idea what she was getting herself into. Sharon defended Kim. “Andrea, don’t listen to any of these nuts. You have a wonderful woman.”
“I’m realizing that fact more and more every day,” said Andrea. “Can I make a toast?”
“Of course,” said Stephanie.
“First of all, I’d like to thank Stephanie for inviting me to dinner that day I saw her in the mall. If she hadn’t, I wouldn’t be sitting here with Kim right now. What a nice holiday gift for me.” That brought a huge smile to Kim’s face. “And it’s also been a pleasure meeting all of you ladies. So, to good friends,” she said as she held up her glass.
“To good friends,” everyone said in unison.
“Okay, ladies,” said Stephanie, “it’s time to eat, so take a seat at the dining room table. She took Sharon by the hand and headed to the kitchen. Dinner was great, as usual. Stephanie is known as the chef of the group, so when she cooks, there’s always a good turnout and a bunch of satisfied bellies. After dinner, everyone sat around the fireplace and talked about old times and the future.
Kim, who was normally heading the group in conversation, was much too preoccupied with Andrea to be more than a mere listener. Andrea had her arms around her waist, her breasts pressed against her back and her lips against her right ear whispering things that took her breath away. “Kim, you feel so good; I can imagine how you’re going to feel without all these clothes between us.”
“Okay,” said Kim. She turned around to face Andrea, who was smiling as though she knew her little plan worked. “Baby, I’ll be right back. Stephanie, come here for a minute,” she said as she walked toward the kitchen. “Steph, would you mind if Andrea and I left now? Between her touch and the stuff she’s whispering in my ear, I think we’re ready to take the next step.”
“Girl, I’m surprised the two of you lasted this long. Please, go, have a good time. I’ll let you know if anything exciting happens.”
“Okay, this evening was great, and as usual, your cooking was flawless. I’ll call you tomorrow…or Sunday.” She gave Stephanie a big hug.
Kim walked over to Andrea, extended her hand and said, “Let’s go.”
They said their goodbyes to everyone. After Stephanie and Sharon walked them to their car and came back in, Stephanie told everyone, “Don’t tell them I told you, but they’re going to make love for the first time. Shhhh.”
“They are?” said Sharon. “That’s so sweet!”
“My wife…such the sentimentalist,” Stephanie said as she shook her head.
On the way home, Andrea told Kim that she didn’t mean to make her leave the party early.
Kim smiled. “Andrea, you knew exactly what you were doing.”
“Okay, I admit that I was trying to turn you on, but I was not trying to make you leave early. I would wait to make love to you for as long as I need to. Do you believe me?”
“Yes, I believe you, Baby. By the way, in case you didn’t notice, it felt good to me, too when you were holding me.”
“Oh, I noticed. So, does that mean that this will be our night?”
“Oh, yes, yes, yes.”
“Come on in,” said Andrea as she turned on the lights. She took Kim’s hand and kissed the back of it. “I’m so glad you’re here.”
“I’m so glad we’re together and alone,” said Kim. “I like your place…it’s so contemporary.”
“Thank you. I’m always into the latest thing, and I guess my house makes that statement, too.”
“It does. I like it a lot.”
“Thank you so much, Baby. Can I get you anything?”
“Just you.”
“Okay, I’ll be right back. Have a seat. I won’t be long.”
Andrea went to her bedroom to light the candles, start the fireplace, turn on the music and make sure that everything else was just the way she wanted it. She had anticipated that this would be the night she and Kim would make love, so she prepared ahead of time. When everything was to her liking, Andrea went back out to the living room where she found Kim flipping through a magazine. She walked in behind Kim and put her arms around her waist. “Do you see anything interesting in that magazine? Andrea whispered in her ear.
“Mmmmm, I’m just trying to keep myself occupied. I’m so nervous.”
“Are you?” You don’t have to be nervous with me. I’m harmless.”
“Maybe you’re physically harmless, but what will you do to my mind?”
Andrea turned Kim around to face her. She wanted her to see the sincerity in her eyes. “Kim, if you’re not ready for this, I understand. It’s not a problem to wait.”
“I know, but I don’t want to wait. I’ll be okay.”
“Listen, please be honest with me. I can assure you that I will not do anything to hurt you, but I realize that those are just words. It’s what you feel inside that matters. So, here’s the question; do you feel safe with me?”
Kim looked deep into Andrea’s eyes. She saw passion and longing and so much sincerity. “Yes, I feel safe with you, and I want this night to be ours.”
A huge smile spread across Andrea’s face that was a combination of joy and relief. She pulled Kim close and softly kissed her lips. Kim slid her tongue between Andrea’s lips, and they both moaned as they enjoyed the softness of their tongues and the passion in their heavy breathing. “Kim,” Andrea whispered as she took her by the hand and headed to the bedroom.
In the bedroom, romance filled the air. The fireplace created warmth on a very chilly night, the soft fragrance of peaches permeated from the candles, and the sensuous music completed the atmosphere for lovemaking. All of this was intoxicating to Kim. Andrea kissed her again and she could barely breathe. Every inch of her wanted to feel Andrea’s body. They began to undress each other. “You are so beautiful,” Andrea whispered as she pulled Kim toward the bed.
“So are you, Baby. Your gaze is intense and penetrating. Every time you look at me, my heart beats faster and my breathing gets heavier.”
“Wow, is that a good thing or a bad thing?”
“It’s good. It feels good.”
Andrea unbuttoned and unzipped Kim’s jeans then slowly slid her hand into her panties and softly placed two of her fingers between Kim’s lips; they both gasped their pleasure. Kim was so wet. She couldn’t remember the last time someone had aroused her that way. Andrea’s touch made her knees weak, and the look in her eyes melted away all her inhibitions. Kim was afraid of losing control. Part of her thought it was dangerous to let herself go with all the emotions that Andrea stirred up in her, and the other part of her reveled in the delight of it all. For this moment, however, she was going to ride this wave of pleasure and deal with the practicality of it all later.
“Kim, sit down on the bed, Baby.” Andrea knelt between Kim’s legs and removed her jeans and underwear. She then removed her own clothing. “Slide back,” she whispered. Kim took off her blouse and her bra and moved to the head of the bed.
Andrea got into bed and lay on top of Kim and kissed her. The sensation was so intense that Kim couldn’t even moan, or breathe for that matter. She had imagined this moment many times, and her imagination could never take her to this place that Andrea had taken her. All she could do was put her arms around her lover and enjoy it.
“Kim, Baby, you feel so good,” Andrea whispered in her ear. She buried her face in the crook of Kim’s neck, enjoyed the softness of her body and the sweet moans that were finally able to escape Kim’s lips. It was passion that they could not have imagined. And this was only their first time together. It would only get better…but was that even possible? After that thought, Andrea decided that she would do whatever she needed to do to hold on to this woman who was all that she dreamed of and more. She planted soft kisses all over Kim’s body. She softly sucked her hard nipples, and Kim felt the tears begin to fill her eyes. She didn’t want Andrea to see that so soon in their relationship, but she was unable to control it. Andrea continued to work her way down Kim’s body with kisses and strokes with her fingertips. Kim’s body began to tremble, and when Andrea buried her face in her wetness, Kim opened up physically and emotionally. The ecstasy overtook her as Andrea expertly worked her tongue in that special place. Kim grabbed hold of the headboard with both hand as if she knew that something big and powerful was coming. Her breath was heavy and her moans were loud. Andrea was licking and sucking every bit of Kim’s wetness, loving every thrust, every tremble and reveling in the sweet taste of her lover. Then it happened…Kim heard someone scream Andrea’s name somewhere in the distance. It sounded like it was someone else, but she knew that it had to be her. She’d had the orgasm that she had only heard about. First, the tears streamed down her face. Then, unable to control it, the emotion just spilled out of her, and she cried in front of Andrea, something she desperately did not want to do.
“Kim, Baby, are you alright? Andrea kissed her on the cheek and wrapped her arms around her.
“Yes, I’m okay. I’m sorry for being so emotional.”
“Kim, it’s okay. That was something you needed to release.”
“You’re right. I just thought it was a little soon to do that in front of you.”
“You shouldn’t feel that way at all. I am here for you. Always feel free to laugh, to cry, to show me any emotions you have. My ears and my arms are always open for you.”
“Any woman who has ever had your heart should be beating herself up every day for letting you go.”
“Oh, Baby, you’re so sweet. You know what? I would prefer your heart over all those other hearts.”
“It’s yours. Thank you, Andrea.”
“Why are you thanking me?”
“Your lovemaking. You can make love with your body, and you also make love with your words. The things you say to me send these wonderful sensations through my body.”
“Wow, no one has ever told me that. I’ll need some time to process that one, Baby. I’m flattered.”
“Andrea, I can still feel your tongue. That was fantastic.”
“It sure was. Let me show you.” Andrea took Kim’s hand. “Touch me, Baby.”
Kim put one finger between Andrea’s lips and the wetness, the softness, and the warmth were intoxicating. “Ooo, Andrea, you feel so good. It’s your turn now, Sweetheart.”
“Okay, I’m yours, Baby.”
Kim and Andrea made love and talked all night. They finally fell asleep in each other’s arms at 4 a.m. A few hours later, Kim woke up to the smells of coffee and cinnamon. A few seconds later, Andrea walked in with a tray. “Good morning, Sleepy Head!”
“Good morning. What have you been doing?”
“Well, my plan was to prepare this elaborate breakfast for us. But my energy level wouldn’t let me do that. You wore me out, Baby.”
“Who, me?”
“Yes, you. So, I decided that we would have a Continental breakfast and I’d take you out to lunch or dinner, whichever you prefer.”
“Wow, that would be nice. It smells good.”
“I hope you enjoy. I sure enjoyed you last night.”
“Andrea, I had a great time. Can we do it again?”
“Oh, yeah…absolutely.
“I’ll look forward to it.”
“Me, too.”
Kim and Andrea were having the same thoughts, but they each knew that it was too soon to discuss those thoughts with each other. Kim wanted to be with Andrea, and Andrea wanted to be with Kim. In time, they would make the commitment to each other because they knew in their hearts that the search for their soulmate was over. For now, they would just enjoy the ride.
The End
