An Abuser's Anthem
by

I'm sorry.
I've said it over again, day and night.
I love you.
Afraid of losing you when the truth comes to light.
I'm sorry.
When you said, "What was the reason for it this time?"
I love you.
You said, "If you love me then why?"

I said, "I'm sorry."
While I try to comfort you as you cry in my arms.
I love you.
When there is never an excuse to do you harm.

I'm sorry.
When I know deep inside I know something is wrong.
I love you.
While in my eyes it was anger and hate that you saw.

I'm sorry.
So many times you and I can't even recall.
I love you.
When I doubt that I am capable of loving at all.

I'm sorry.
My hands are raised and you are crying at my feet.
But baby I love you.
You look at me and say "Then why must you hit me?"

I'm sorry.
As you lay in a hospital bed yet you are no longer afraid.
I love you.
For you have had enough when the cops take me away.

I'm sorry.
Even now I can hear that same sad weak song.
I love you.
While I sit in this cell I know this is where I belong.
